Understanding Brain Fog

One of the worst symptoms of FCS & one I have to fight almost every single day is Brain Fog.

WHAT IS BRAIN FOG?

Brain fog is a term to describe the inability to focus, remember things & difficulty with problem solving.
Brain fog feels like it takes hours to complete a 10-minute task or that you’re struggling to listen & comprehend what is being said in a meeting, for example. Or you’re constantly second guessing yourself about locking the door or turning off the stove because you genuinely can’t remember if you did.

“it’s not because I’m rude or unhelpful, it’s because I’m mentally not in the same room as you”.
My experience with brain fog?

So, in the past I’ve been called lazy, always forgetful & even rude…

  • The amount of times I’ve said ‘I’ll do it later’… of course I sound lazy but there are times I literally cannot function, not like ‘I need a coffee to wake up’ kind of functioning, I mean I feel like I can’t do basic things like pick up a pen & write my name because I have to think about picking up the pen & think about writing my name & that’s the problem… I can’t think.
  • I can clearly remember what I did on the 6th of August 1998 at 15:47 but I can’t for the life of me remember what I had for breakfast this morning… ok, I’m exaggerating! but I do struggle with my short term memory. I literally have 3 or 4 different to-do lists in different parts of the house plus reminders on my phone.
So, if I forget your birthday or I forget to message/call back…I’m sorry.
  • If you know me, & I mean really know me, you’ll know I’m not rude at all but there have been times where I haven’t responded the way I’m expected to (or how I normally would) & sometimes that makes me come across as rude. This is because I completely space out & it’s usually when I’m around people (I think my anxiety is partly to blame). For example, if someone comes to your house, you’d offer them a drink or if they were carrying loads of things you’d offer to help. These are the things I forget to do &it’s not because I’m rude or unhelpful, it’s because I’m mentally not in the same room as you.
Always remember...

If someone forgets to do or say something, don’t take it to heart & don’t make assumptions. Understand that there may be a reason for their behaviour especially if they don’t seem their usual self.
